Meta’s next headset is built for the couch. The Meta VR Glasses weigh about 100 grams, use 5K micro organic light emitting diode (micro OLED) displays, and move the battery and chips into a tethered compute puck so the weight stays off your face. They are due in spring 2027 at $1,299.99, with IMAX Enhanced certification and immersive sports on the schedule. Virtual reality (VR) creator Nori summed up the mood right after the Connect keynote:
The Meta VR Glasses are also the first VR device with an IMAX Enhanced certification! They did also mention that we’ll be getting 3D movies on Disney+ starting November alongside HBO Max, Peacock and Paramount+. ESPN and UFC are also doing 100+ live events a year now!

The excitement is fair, but a few details need sorting. Meta’s 100+ events a year promise is for the glasses, with partners Major League Baseball (MLB), NBC Sports, TNT Sports and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). ESPN’s role on Quest today is college football. And Meta has not yet confirmed which headsets get the November 3D streaming catalogs. So here is what is coming, what is already on your Quest, and how the last two and a half years got us here.

What is coming
The glasses. Adam Savage’s Tested got hands on time at Connect, and the demos leaned on media: IMAX Enhanced aspect ratios, 3D films and Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos playback, not just games.

A movie store inside the headset. Quest has never had its own film shop. Meta says “hundreds” of 2D and 3D films will be available to rent or buy in the United States (US) “later this year,” growing to thousands worldwide by spring 2027. There is no launch date or pricing yet.
A Quest exclusive concert film. Billie Eilish and James Cameron’s Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour is set to arrive in 3D, to rent or buy, in November 2026.
3D in the big streaming apps. Meta says 3D titles are coming to Disney+ in November, with Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ catalogs “for the very first time.” Meta’s own announcement does not name the headset, and the Disney+ listing on Quest only says 3D is coming “soon.” Treat it as likely, not locked, and check before you plan a 3D movie night.
More sports in 2027. The glasses get the big events slate. Quest owners get Meta’s shorter promise of “more sports to come in 2027.”
What you can do now that you could not before
Here is the dated record, starting from our own setup guide.
- Feb 29, 2024: We published The Perfect Plex VR Setup: Plex Media Server streamed through Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) into Bigscreen Beta on Quest 3. Back then, this was one of the best ways to get a private theater feel. It still works.
- Apr 17, 2024: UploadVR confirmed YouTube on Quest 3 plays 8K, including 180 and 360 degree 3D video, after the YouTube VR v1.54 update. High dynamic range (HDR) tops out at 4K, and Quest 3S does not get 8K.
- June 2024: Netflix moved to the Quest browser at 1080p with mixed reality passthrough and multitasking. The old headset app had been stuck at 480p and was pulled in mid July 2024, so you watch Netflix in the browser now. It still works.
- 2024: Horizon OS v71 added Dolby Atmos support.
- Fall 2024: A Prime Video app with offline downloads arrived around the Quest 3S launch.
- Nov 6, 2024: YouTube VR v1.60.19 added co-watching with up to seven friends, including 4K movies, in Horizon Home or mixed reality.
- Sep 17, 2025: Meta unveiled Horizon TV, one hub for recommendations, a watchlist and live event alerts, and promised Dolby Vision. The same day brought Blumhouse Enhanced Cinema, where M3GAN and The Black Phone spill effects into your real room.
- Dec 15, 2025: The official Disney+ app launched in the US with up to 4K, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos on Premium, and downloads. Before, Disney+ meant the browser at 720p.
- Sep 23, 2026: At Connect, Meta announced the glasses, the movie store, the Billie Eilish film, 3D streaming catalogs, and more TV app partners (Prime Video, YouTube, DIRECTV, AMC+, Crunchyroll, Plex and Tubi).
- Sep 29, 2026: Open Season, a Meta Presents original with Draymond Green, landed in the TV app. UploadVR called it “the clearest, most detailed video I have ever seen on Quest.”
- Oct 10, 2026: ESPN live college football began in the TV app, starting with No. 1 Texas vs Oklahoma.
- Oct 13, 2026 (today): The store and 3D catalogs are announced but not live. Everything above them is on your headset now.
Movies and TV on Quest today
The short version: native apps replaced browser workarounds. Disney+ and Prime Video now have real apps with downloads, which matters on planes and in hotels. UploadVR notes Quest 3’s liquid crystal display (LCD) panels limit what 4K and HDR can add, so the bigger win is bitrate. Netflix still has no downloads, and its tiles in the TV app open the browser.
Rhys Da King VR walks through the TV app, screen sizing, mixed reality dimming, Bigscreen and Blumhouse:
He sums up the appeal: “it’s like the closest you’re going to get to having your own personal cinema.”
Where Plex fits. Plex is on Meta’s list of partners it is “working with” for the TV app, but a built in Plex experience is not confirmed yet. Until it is, the Bigscreen and DLNA setup remains the way to watch your own library, and Bigscreen still handles watching with friends and 3D rentals.
Sports: live games in 8K

Before this month, ESPN on Quest meant 180 degree highlight clips in Xtadium. Since Oct 10, the TV app streams live college football in 8K, 180 degrees, with Dolby Atmos, at no extra cost in the US. According to Tiledmedia, which powers the stream, a virtual Jumbotron shows the TV broadcast in sync, you hear the commentary plus stadium audio, and it runs at 60 frames per second (fps), with Quest 3 preferred. Replays and highlights are on demand.
Upcoming games on Meta’s schedule (times in Eastern Time):
- Oct 17: Notre Dame vs BYU
- Oct 24: Texas A&M vs Alabama
- Oct 31: Florida vs Georgia
- Nov 7: to be announced
Games run weekly through the College Football Playoff (CFP) title game in January 2027.
Basketball. Xtadium has offered National Basketball Association (NBA) League Pass multi game viewing, up to eight games in mixed reality, plus watch parties, since the 2023 to 2024 season. It is US only and blackouts apply. Whether 180 degree courtside games continue this season is unclear.

Should you wait for the glasses?
If weight is what keeps you from finishing a movie in VR, the glasses are the fix, and spring 2027 is not far off. If you want a better screen tonight, your Quest already has native Disney+ and Prime Video, 1080p Netflix, 8K YouTube, horror films that leave the screen, and live college football from the 40 yard line. That is a very different headset from the one we set up with Plex in February 2024.
